Policy Analysis: Medicaid Expansion Could Help Address Oklahoma’s Surging Meth Crisis
I wrote this article as a data analysis intern at the Oklahoma Policy Institute's Open Justice Oklahoma program. It discusses Oklahoma's meth crisis in the context of statewide Medicaid expansion. To my knowledge, this was the first piece published by the think tank regarding SQ 802 after OK Policy's director made an official statement in support of the state question. It's my hope that this analysis makes readers aware of how prevalent this issue is in their community, how deeply it affects those struggling with addiction, and how vital it is that we work together to provide access to better health care and substance abuse-related treatment to all.
Press Release: Subaru "Share the Love" Event
I wrote up this press release for Bob Moore Subaru when I interned with the Monarch Marketing Group in OKC. It was meant to inform the local community of Bob Moore Subaru’s philanthropic outreach to Ally’s House, a nonprofit described below. I wrote this draft of the release May 16, 2018, before submitting it to one of my supervisors. Completing this press release required knowledge of and skill in promotional writing.
Feature Story: Local Band Gains a New Fan
(It's me; I'm the new fan.) I interviewed a local indie-alternative band, St Basic, for a piece that was published to The OU Daily's website April 5, 2017. Since this was my first-ever feature story, I conducted about four hours of interviews that gave me some neat insight into each band member's experiences. Since I was writing the story to practice promotional writing, the band's audience was my audience.
This story cycled through the news outlet’s typical process in Slack: The Arts and Entertainment Desk editor sent it to the Copy Desk, where the piece underwent two or three rounds of copy editing before it was handed off to the Copy Desk editor for website publication and was finally promoted on social media by Engagement Desk staff. I incorporated elements of journalistic writing that I’d picked up on, including AP style. Working on this feature story improved my interviewing skills and pushed me to explore my community more often to seek out new and interesting opportunities.
